Interview
Q: What gang did you join?
A: The Latin Kings/Queens
Q: How did you get initiated into the gang?
A: I had to go through a brutal beat down by some of my friends/current gangs members.
Q: How were you introduced to the gang?
A: I was brought in by a biological sibling.
Q: What did the gang make you wear or what did you wear by choice to represent the gang?
A: Black and yellow clothing, bandannas, or beads which could only contain those colors.
Q: Did you do any graffiti representing the gang?
A: No I personally never did. If I had to it would be a gold or yellow crown making sure it detailed five points on the crown.
Q: Looking back, what could have been done in order to prevent you from joining the gang? By your parents? By the community?
A: Definitely parenting. The community is a choice made by parents which results to the type of friends you have. Parents need to be involved with their children and are the first source of learning right from wrong and the initial source of guidance.
Q: Did you get out of the gang?
A: Yes. I was let go when I got pregnant with my first child. I was allowed to walk away with my colors.
